Rio Blanco County
Rio Blanco County is a rural area to the southwest of Routt County. The county's population of almost 6,000 people is mostly divided between two cities, Rangely and Meeker, which differ in character and amenities. The county seat is Meeker, which is a 1.5-hour drive from Steamboat Springs. The landscape is green and the pace of life is slow. There are two grocery stores and no large chain stores, which make for a quieter but sometimes less-convenient life. Agriculture and tourism are both important to Meeker's economy. Meeker sits along the scenic byway that takes tourists to the Flat Tops Wilderness Area, so it is a popular stopping point for hikers and backpackers. Home prices in Meeker are fairly affordable, with a typical family-sized home selling for $140,000. There are few choices for less than $100,000. Although Meeker is not a popular choice for workers commuting to Steamboat Springs, it is the home base for some workers in Rifle and Glenwood Springs. In the northwest corner of the county is Rangely, where oil and gas fields are more common than ranches. The landscape here is high desert, and there are good opportunities for hiking and biking. Average home prices in Rangely are about $90,000. There is one stoplight in town and very little shopping. But, residents say Rangely offers a safe, friendly community at an affordable price. |
